It is one of the densest woods used for beads, dense enough to sink in water, and it was the wood of choice for fine furniture at the Ming and Qing courts. Despite the name, it is not related to fragrant sandalwood.\u003c\/p\u003e\n\u003cp\u003eNew beads are a warm red-brown. With wear and handling the colour deepens toward a dark purple-red and the surface takes on a soft shine. Collectors look closely at the grain: fine, even \"mud grain\" with few flecks; wavy \"flame grain\"; and small gold flecks that catch the light.\u003c\/p\u003e\n\u003cp\u003eOur zitan comes as wrist bracelets, hand strands and 108-bead strands, with beads from 6 mm to 12 mm.
